Political Thought of Islam

Image
Political Thought of Islam By: Professor Maqsood Jafri   The political system advocated by Islam needs to be clarified.  The modern Muslim scholars say that Islam is a democratic religion, yet many Muslim clerics today do not believe in democracy.  I would like to discuss briefly what I feel is meant by Islamic democracy.  A few verses of the Holy Quran are presented here which give us the basics for Islamic political thought.  In Sura Baqara (The Heifer) the Quran says: “And remember when your Lord said to the angels, I am going to place a successor (Khalifa) on Earth” (2:30).  This verse is about the vice-regency of Adam.  Then again in the chapter The Heifer about Abraham the Quran says: “And remember when the Lord of Abraham tried him with certain commands which he fulfilled.  Allah said to him, verily, I am going to make you a leader (Imam) of mankind.  Abraham said, ‘And my offspring? Allah said, ‘my providence includes not the w...

life lesson by mufti menk-60 1. Don’t let Satan make you doubt. He’s good at that. Doubt creates uncertainties in your heart & mind. It makes you feel uneasy & directionless. You need to anchor your faith firmly & take control of your life. The Almighty is always there to steady you & get you back on track! 2. Sitting around, wasting time gossiping, and judging others is not unfamiliar to many. They forget that such acts are a sin. Use the time wisely to improve yourself. Remember, tomorrow is not promised to anyone. So don’t waste your short life and start rearranging your priorities! 3. Train yourself to be less angry and reactive to everything that’s being said about you. Every comment, every retort, every criticism; just take them all in your stride. Remember, silence often speaks volumes. Save your energy for that which really requires your involvement! 4. How can you stay positive in a world that’s really quite bleak out there? Let’s admit it. It can be rath...

life lesson by mufti menk-59 1. Almighty. Despite life’s uncertainties, we know You’re directing our steps towards all that’s good. May Your Mercy surround us every moment. Our hearts are strengthened because we have hope in You. We know You’ll open doors that we didn’t even knock-on. Keep us firm in the faith! 2. Even the most "genuine" people can fool you. In this day & age, it’s hard to tell who’s a true friend. So you go through life hoping people are being sincere & genuine. But be prepared to be let down. It’s part of life. People will hurt you. Only the Almighty can heal you! 3. Don’t complicate life. Don’t overthink. Don’t create problems that aren’t there in the first place. Live simply. There’s no need for excesses. The Almighty wants ease for us. He won’t burden us with that which we have no capacity to bear. So take life in your stride. Just live! 4. There are some whose mission in life is to criticize, hate & look for things negative. They bring ab...

life lesson by mufti menk 1. Don’t jump to conclusions. Things aren’t always what they seem. Our conclusions may be logical but they may not be true. By refraining from making the wrong assumptions, we can avoid unnecessary pain & conflict. So don’t be too quick to judge & condemn. Instead, be discerning! 2. The Almighty doesn’t care about your looks; what you do; who you know. He looks at your heart. Also you’re not defined by your past. It’s just the opposite with the world. People will look at all of the above & more. Get your priorities right. Who matters more? It’s your choice! 3. Beware what you think. Get rid of negative thoughts, assumptions, what ifs etc. They serve no purpose. If you keep replaying them, you’ll end up the loser. That’s what Satan wants. Most of the scenarios in your mind, won’t happen! Clear out the cobwebs & start seeing light! 4. The Almighty looks at your heart. Your connections, achievements, accolades etc don’t matter. He’s watchin...

life lesson by mufti menk 1. Learn to stay calm in a world that is so chaotic today. Whatever you can’t control, hand it over to the Almighty. Do your best with the rest that life has offered you. Don’t compare yourself with others. We all deal with things differently. Accept the differences. Respectfully! 2. Many of us are fooled into believing that strength is what we can do. No. Strength is more importantly overcoming the things we once thought we couldn't do. Learn to focus your heart and mind to it. Believe in yourself and seek help from the Almighty. You’ll get there eventually! 3. We feel exhausted at times, on the verge of giving up. We even lower our expectations. But we have to persevere because only the Almighty knows when the time is right. Keep our faith firm while waiting, trusting You always. Aameen 4. You’re not a failure. You’re not doomed. You’re not worthless. Everyone makes mistakes in life. Everyone falls. Even champions. The difference is they get up and try...

life lessons by mufti menk 1. Be mindful how you use social media. It’s becoming more hostile recently. Never forget that social media is a tool. We decide how the tool is used. Use it to spread goodness & positivity; the ripple effects can be tremendous. Avoid bad words, no matter what they say about you! 2. Unfortunately, our society has low tolerance for those who fail. In fact, many success stories start with failure. Failure makes you tougher. It helps to redirect you in the right direction. Embrace failure for it’s a sign that you’re trying & that’s good enough for the Almighty! 3. Almighty. Help us understand that even when faced with fear & anxiety, You’re there to comfort us. May we not fret & worry over what lies ahead & instead learn to trust You in all our affairs. When the world feels out of control, make us turn to prayer to calm our hearts. Aameen. 4. Almighty. We hand over everything to You, knowing that You’re the Best of Planners. Ease our worries...

life lessons by mufti menk 1. Almighty. Today we thank You for all the blessings You’ve bestowed on us. Thank You for hearing all the unspoken words we couldn’t utter because the hurt was too much to bear. Thank You for mending all our wounds, seen & unseen; and for making the pain more bearable. Aameen! 2. Almighty. Amidst the uncertainty & crisis facing us, we pray for the comfort & safety of everyone across the globe. We need Your guidance & direction. We are completely reliant on You, more so during these challenging times. May we always be grateful for what You have given us! 3. Don’t get involved in people’s drama & dysfunction. There’s a lot of that going on nowadays. As much as they try to engage you, take a step back. If they’re reasonable & open to discussion, you could try advising them. Else, stay clear or you could lose your peace altogether! 4. No matter how badly you’ve messed up, you’re NOT a failure. Don’t entertain that thought if it cros...

He’s watching if you act out of kindness, love & compassion. Or is it all about you. Society has become rather selfish. If your heart’s in the right place!, you’re on the right track! 4. Beware the company you keep. Not all are supporters. Not all will cheer you on or want to see you succeed. In...
